Yes, racism, as we understand it today, is about 400 years old. This isn't to say that other groups haven't faced oppression or that racism is "worse" or that it has only affected black people since its invention. It isn't even to say that black people weren't marginalised before "racism" was invented (they were just seen as savages or heathens or uncivilised before then).
The notion of "race" was invented as a justification for keeping slaves, but in no way is it the birth of oppression or colonialism or any other evils. I'm just speaking specifically about the justifications for this particular brand of oppression.
